Some hoodlums suspected to be Gunmen has set a police station on fire in owerri, state capital of imo state while also freeing prisoners in the correctional center located inside the headquarters.
According to an eyewitness, the attackers arrive the police headquarters in the wee hours of Monday and start freeing a yetbto be specified number of inmates and criminal suspects.
DAILY GIST though learnt that more than 1,500 inmates were released following an attack at the Owerri Correctional Prison in the state.
It was hours of tension in the the area near the imo government house as the gunmen kept shooting sporadically.
The gunmen reportedly operated from 1am till 3am on Monday.
They sang solidarity songs at the Government House roundabout for about 30 minutes before attacking the facilities, a security source told Punch.
On breaking into the prison facility with the aid of explosives and dynamite, the attackers told inmates, “Go home, Jesus has risen. You have no reason to be here.”
It was gathered that senior government officials have been reportedly asked to shelter-in-place.
The spokesman of the imo Police command, Godson Orlando has not yet reacted or give any details about the incident as at the time of publishing this report
But the spokesperson of the correctional service in Imo, Mr James Madugba, confirmed the incident to journalists in Owerri on Monday.
Madugba disclosed that the event occurred at about 2.00 a.m Monday also said that many inmates escaped with some operational vehicles razed, he however revealed it that the actual number of prisoners freed is yet to be ascertained.
‘In his reaction, he said; ‘We can confirm that the facility was attacked at about 2.00 a.m. Monday with operational vehicles burnt and many inmates at large.
“We have yet to confirm definite figures but we’ll make them public as soon as possible “he added
He urged all business owners not to panic and go on with their daily work activities, promising that the situation is under the control of security operatives.
