Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara has nominated new caretaker chairmen for the 23 local government areas in the state.
The governor transmitted the list to the three-member Rivers State House of Assembly led by the Speaker, Victor Jumbo.
The development comes amid the renewed political crisis in the state owing to the refusal of the former council chairmen to vacate their offices after the expiration of their tenure.
DAILY GIST reports that disputes over the tenure of the local government chairmen had sparked tension in the oil-rich state.
This has intensified the conflict between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, a feud that began just three months after the former succeeded the latter as governor of Rivers State.
The governor had instructed the chairmen, supported by Wike, to leave office due to their expired terms.
However, they refused, citing that the pro-Wike faction in the Rivers House of Assembly had extended their terms by six months because the Fubara government failed to conduct Local Government elections.
In response to this directive, a significant number of youths, believed to be Fubara’s supporters in a show of unity and strength, gathered at LGA secretariats across the state.
In a statement issued by the Clerk of the House, G.M. Gillis-West, the Assembly invited the nominees for screening on Wednesday by 8:00 am.
