Gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen at the wee hours of Sunday have attacked some residents in Igangan, Ibarapa North Local Government Area of Oyo State, DAILY GIST is reporting.
The residents in the area alleged that it was Fulani herdsmen that invaded the town
It was gathered the Fulani herdsmen who came in their numbers attacked the area and start unleashing terror on the people.
It wasn’t immediately clear the total number of dead persons but DAILY GIST reliably gathered that at least 10 lives were lost during the attack. five residents were confirmed dead from gunshots by the attackers while security operatives also killed five during the gun battle.
It was equally gathered that a petrol station, cars and a truck were burnt down by the attackers.
An activist who is also the Secretary of Farmers Union based in the town, Mr Taiwo Adeagbo confirmed the sad development.
Oladiran Oladokun, Convener of Igangan Development Advocate (IDA) also confirmed the incident on Sunday morning.
He alleged that the invasion was due to the banishment of the Seriki Fulani in the town.
He added that Fulani herdsmen had been threatening to attack the town since the Seriki Fulani was banished from the town.
In his words; “Are you calling in respect of Iganga incident? That is how we saw it.
“It was the Fulani herdsmen that have been threatening to come and attack Iganga because of the Seriki Saliu that we sent away from the town.
“So, we have been receiving threats and they carried out their threat midnight.
“They operated between 11.pm on Saturday till around 3.am today (Sunday).
“We can’t count casualties now because it was not safe for anybody to come out now.
“So, it was during daybreak that some people are coming out from bushes where they ran to. We are still counting.”
All efforts to speak with Police Public Relations Officer in Oyo State, Adewale Osifeso on the incident prove abortive.
