An gas tanker explosion has reportedly occurred in Ita-Oshin area of Abeokuta, Ogun State on Saturday.
The incident caused panic among residents after it claims lives while six vehicles were burnt beyond recognition.
According to report, a vehicle heading towards Abeokuta main city from the Obada-Oko axis appeared to have lost control, forcing the driver to hit the median before the explosion which caused panic for people in the area.
Reports claimed that four persons were said to have died in the inferno.
Emergency response teams, including personnel from the Federal Road Safety Corps, Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Control Agency and the police have arrived the scene to rescue victims and contain the inferno.
Some commercial cars were affected and shops and containers erected by the roadside at Ita Oshin were seriously affected.
However, according to a spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Florence Okpe, the accident occurred on Saturday.
The suspected cause of the crash was mechanical deficiency which led to the tanker vehicle crash on the road barricade.
The tanker burst into flames while other vehicles and shops were burnt.
“The crash occurred at about 1610 hrs involving a tanker laden with gas.
Number of people involved were six and all male adult. Two got injured
and unfortunately one person died which is the motor boy who was trapped.” she said.
“The fire service were contacted immediately and the scene was cordoned off to avoid secondary crash.”
“The corpse was deposited at the State General Hospital Morgue, Abeokuta, and the injured victims were taken by the family.”
