Chaos have ensued in the ancient city of Ile Ife, Osun State on Saturday as some angry youths took to the street to protest the death of a suspect simply identified as Olufemi Oriyomi who died in police custody.
DAILY GIST had earlier reported the police command in Osun arrested 3 suspected ritualists with a human heart in Osogbo/OAU Ife Campus Road, Osun State.
Oriyomi was arrested at Ile Ife on Thursday in connection with alleged ritual killings along with the two other suspects.
The Command’s spokesperson, SP Yemisi Opalola, in a statement by DAILY GIST on Saturday said the trio on a motorcycle, were flagged down by Police on ‘Stop and Search’, “but rather than stop, sped off, and were pursued.”
The trio, according to the statement, were arrested in Safejo area of Ile-Ife.
The human heart, which they claimed was one of their friends, and various criminal charms, were found on them, Opalola stated.
Opalola further stated that one of the suspects, Oriyomi fell sick and was taken to hospital for treatment, but unfortunately, died while on admission.
His corpse, according to her, has been deposited at the State hospital for autopsy.
The development however infuriated the youths in the town who alleged that the suspect was actually killed by the police in the course of their interrogation.
Some youths had earlier invaded the house of the police officer who led the team to arrest the suspects and destroyed his property during the protest.
The angry youths blocked Iloro, Moore, Ilode and Enuwa roads, while the police were trying to dispatch them, shooting one person to death.
