Few hours to the planned nationwide Protest, the Lagos State Police Command anti-bomb squad has foiled a bomb explosion in Ikeja area of the state.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin stated this on Wednesday.
He said the device, which was wrapped in a bag, was dropped by the roadside from an unregistered vehicle along Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way.
According to the Commissioner of Police EOD- CBRN, a white Corolla car was sighted parked close to the gate of Police Mobile Force, PMF 23, Barracks along Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way Ikeja when a young man who alighted from the car dropped a bag by the side of the Nigerian Customs Service Federal Operations Unit fence returned to the vehicle and zoomed off.
The act got the attention of the security operatives from the Base who quickly mobilised to the area, identified the content to be an improvised device and subsequently cordoned off to detonate the device accordingly
Tension has continued to rise over the planned hardship protest that will be held in the 36 states of the federation on August 1
The Nigerian government led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had called on the organisers of the demonstration to shelve the planned protest, citing potential hijack by some criminal elements.
The youths, however insisted on going on with the protest.
