A high court in Lagos has sentenced Assistant Superintendent of Police, Drambi Vandi to death by hanging for his role in the death of Pregnant lawyer, Bolanle Raheem.
DAILY GIST reports that Vandi was arraigned on count charge of murder but he had pleaded not guilty.
Vandi allegedly shot Mrs Raheem, an expectant mother, on Christmas Day in 2022 at the Ajah roundabout in Lagos.
The police officer is attached to the Ajiwe police division in the Ajah area of the state.
He was suspended two days after the incident.
Vandi was said to have pulled the trigger, with the bullet piercing the chest of the deceased.
The lawyer was declared dead at the third hospital she was taken to after the shooting incident.
The incident elicited widespread outrage, with many Nigerians calling for investigation into the activities of police officers attached to the Ajiwe police station, Ajah.
The Lagos State Government had alleged that the defendant fatally shot Raheem on the chest on Dec. 25, 2022.
He was consequently arraigned in court for murder.
Ibironke Harrison, the trial judge, in her ruling on Monday, convicted Vandi of a one-count charge of murder.
Justice Harrison held that the prosecution, the Lagos State Government, has proven the case against the convict beyond all reasonable doubt.
“The court found the defendant guilty on one count of murder. You will be hanged by the neck till you are dead,”the judge ruled.
