The Court D’Appal of Cotonou has declined the extradition of Yoruba activist, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho pending further investigation.
The court ordered that Igboho should be kept in prison custody pending further investigation.
It was however gathered that Sunday Igboho would be granted access to medical care
The court, which was expected to start hearing the case at 10:00am, barred reporters and supporters of Igboho who besieged the premises. The hearing commenced at about 5:00pm.
The case was heard behind closed doors as the court limited attendance to lawyers, Igboho’s wife, Ropo, and a few others.
DAILY GIST gathered that supporters of Igboho were dispersed from the premises of the court later in the evening, by Police operatives prompting fears that he might be deported to Nigeria.
Supporters of the activist, who were earlier dispersed by Police in Benin Republic however reconverged, it was learnt.
The Nigerian government noted that igboho was on a watchlist for alleged trafficking in arms, inciting violence that could result in social disturbance and causing disunity in Nigeria.
DAILY GIST reports that Sunday Igboho was on Monday arrested In Benin Republic alongside his wife, Ropo, while trying to board a flight to Germany.
it was gathered that Igboho’s wife who was also arraigned on Thursday has been released on Thursday evening.
The court directed its officials to immediately return the passport and other documents seized from the wife of the activist, Ropo Igboho
