ASUU Reacts To CONUA Recognition By FG

The lingering strike action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will be called off in days and not weeks, frontline team of ASUU lawyers,  Senior Advocate of Nigerian, SAN, Femi Falana has said on Monday.

The Senior Advocate stated this at the book launch entitled Breaking Coconut With Your Head, by Lanre Arogundade on Monday in Lagos.

ASUU had a team of lawyers led by a frontline human rights activist, Mr. Femi Falana, SAN.

Falana on Monday stated that it is likely that the strike will be concluded outside the courtroom.

DAILY GIST recalls that the Court of Appeal on Friday had ordered the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, to call of its ongoing strike immediately.

The appellate court said ASUU should first obey the order of an industrial court which directed the suspension of the strike before seeking to appeal the judgment.

The court gave ASUU seven days within which to file the appeal following the obedience to the ruling of the lower court

The court said resumption of work by the lecturers is the only condition that the union’s request to appeal the ruling of the National Industrial Court which ordered the union to call off its strike will be given effect.

DAILY GIST reported that the National Industrial Court in its ruling had ordered ASUU to suspend its eight months industrial action which began on February 14.

Unsatisfied by the order, the union, in a 14-ground of appeal it lodged through its team of lawyers led by a frontline human rights activist, Mr. Femi Falana, SAN, equally applied for a stay of execution of the judgement.

It could be also recalled that the appellate court had earlier urged both FG and ASUU to explore an out-of-court resolution to resolve the disputes, however the two parties failed to reach agreement.
