A member of Boko Haram terrorist group has surrendered to troops of the 26 Task Force Brigade, Joint Task Force (JTF) Operation Hadin Kai, in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State.
According to counter-insurgency expert and security analyst Zagazola Makama, the insurgent, who served under the command of notorious Boko Haram leader Ali Ngulde in the Mandara Mountains, turned himself in around 11:30 a.m. on March 1.
He surrendered to troops stationed along the Gwoza-Limankara Road, handing over an AK-47 rifle and a magazine loaded with seven rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition.
The fighter cited relentless military offensives, internal leadership oppression, injustice among their ranks, and severe food shortages caused by disrupted supply routes as reasons for abandoning the group.
He also revealed that many fighters remain stranded in the Mandara Mountains, eager to surrender but terrified of execution by their commanders.
“Many of our people wanted to lay down their arms but they fear that they will be killed by both our leaders and the Nigerian Military. I never thought that it was easy to lay down my gun and come out. I am sure when they see this they will start to run out from the bushes to surrender,” he said.
The surrendered insurgent is currently in military custody for profiling and further investigation.
