The authorities of Benin republic have taken a decision over the Nigerian government plea to immediately extradit the self acclaimed Yoruba activist, Adeyemo Sunday Popularly known as Sunday Igboho.
The Republic of Benin has rejected the federal government attempts to hastily extradite the activist.
DAILY GIST had earlier reported how Sunday Igboho was arrested by security operatives in Cotonou, Benin Republic.
The is coming after the Nigerian government had placed Igboho on a stop list, a development the federal government claimed it would facilitate his arrest anywhere he is found.
Until his arrest, Igboho’s whereabout was unknown to the general public since the Department of State Services(DSS) had raided his house in ibadan and declared him wanted.
According to reports, Igboho was nabbed in Cotonou, Benin Republic with his German wife, Mrs Ropo Adeyemo in an attempt to flee to Germany to evade arrest by the DSS operatives in Nigeria
Igboho was arrested by the security forces in Benin Republic about three weeks after the Department of State Services declared him wanted for allegedly stockpiling arms, an allegation he has since denied.
However, It was gathered that the Nigerian Government planned to extradite the activist on Wednesday (yesterday), but Benin Republic insisted that it would not be part of any process that was against due process.
According to reports, Benin Republic had shown itself to be a country that respects the rule of law and due process
One of the lawyers of Igboho, Pelumi Olajengbesi noted that Igboho’s legal team in Benin Republic were in talks with the Beninise government
He disclosed that despite pressure from the Nigerian government, the government of Benin had insisted on following due process including a repatriation hearing to determine whether or not Igboho was guilty as accused by the Nigerian secret police.
DAILY GIST had also reported that The Buhari-led administration and the German authorities are currently in battle with the officials of Benin republic over the arrest and possible extradition Sunday Igboho to Nigeria.
Benin Republic have a tough decision to make over the possible extradition of Igboho back to Nigeria.
