The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory on Thursday upheld the appeal of the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.
The Nigerian government had filed terrorism and treasonable felony charges against the IPOB leader.
But the court in its ruling on Thursday discharged and acquitted Kanu of allegations of terrorism and treasonable felony.
A three-member panel of justices led by Justice Jummai Hanatu struck out the seven-count charges of preferred against him by the federal government.
The panel held that the trial court had no jurisdiction to entertain the case following Kanu’s rendition from Kenya.
Kanu’s lawyer and human rights activist, Ifeanyi Ejiofor also confirmed the development on his Facebook page on Thursday.
“Appeal allowed, Oyendu Mazi Nnamdi KANU, discharged and acquitted. We have won!,” he wrote.
Kanu had in his appeal dated April 29 and marked CA/ABJ/CR/625/2022, applied to be discharged and acquitted.
Kanu was first arraigned on December 23, 2015 and was later granted bail on April 25, 2017.
However he was re-arrested in Kenya and re-arraigned in court after he jumped bail.
