A 21-year-old woman searching for employment was gang raped and robbed imafter being deceived by two men who posed as job recruiters.
The victim was reportedly contacted by an individual who identified himself as “Anthony,” claiming she had been shortlisted for an accountant position.
The pair arranged to meet at around 3 p.m. at the corner of Robson Manyika and Angwa Street in the Harare central business district.
According to the police report, when the woman arrived, she found two men waiting in a silver Honda Fit. She got into the vehicle and sat beside Anthony, unaware of their true intentions. Under the pretext of discussing the job offer further, Anthony instructed his accomplice to drive towards Chitungwiza.
Once along Seke Road, the suspects turned violent. They robbed the woman of her iPhone and the $2 she had on her, then took turns segxwally assaulting her inside the car without protection. After the assault, they abandoned her by the roadside and fled the scene.
Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza confirmed the incident. “Police are investigating a rape and robbery case. The complainant was referred to Parirenyatwa Hospital for medical examinations,” he said. No arrests had been made at the time of this report.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police has since urged job seekers to exercise heightened vigilance when responding to job adverts, especially those received through unsolicited messages or informal channels. Authorities reiterated calls for the public to verify the authenticity of job interviews and report any suspicious offers to the police promptly.
